Some neighbourhoods suffer a serious lack of species diversity, with mainly ornamental, non-native or invasive tree species such as Bradford pear, Japanese tree lilac and Norway maple.
Properly planned, the lilac season can be extended to well over a month, beginning with some of the earliest varieties, such as S . oblata, Korean early lilac and ending five or six weeks later with S . reticulata, Japanese tree lilac.
Some of my personal discoveries that day were the Japanese tree lilac, Syringa reticulata, a 30-footer whose spreading branches were covered with white fragrant blossoms; an old Franklinia alatamaha, with striated dark and light gray bark ( its twisting, arching branches will bear creamy white, 3-inch flowers in August ); and a 30-foot-tall Chinese Stewartia ( Stewartia sinensis ) whose satiny smooth bark is mottled with rose-orange, tan, gray and green.
